The town’s biggest employer, Gundagai Meat Processors (GMP), is giving every fully COVID-19 vaccinated employee a $100 voucher to spend at a local business in order to help increase the vaccination rate and support retailers doing it tough during the pandemic.
With lockdowns and stay at home orders greatly affecting the Gundagai business community, with some even forced to temporarily close their doors, the incentive has the potential to put $30,000 back into the local economy.
GMP CEO Will Barton said the company will give a $100 voucher to every member of staff who is fully vaccinated.
GMP has around 260 employees and another 40 regular contractors, all of which are eligible for the incentive.
“The benefits are two-fold,” Mr Barton said.
“We need people to be vaccinated and we also need to help businesses that are struggling in the main street.
“Our vaccination rates are pretty good at GMP, there’s a good chunk of people that are already fully vaccinated, but we know as a business that we would most likely have to shut down if we got a positive COVID case until we’ve got a really high level of vaccination, and that would be very challenging for the business but also for our staff.
“Our best course of action is to increase vaccination rates.”
Announced a few weeks ago, Mr Barton said the reaction from staff has been very positive.
The vouchers will be broken down into two $50 dollar vouchers so they can be spent at two different businesses if people choose to do so.
GMP will start handing out the vouchers once all local stores are given the green light by the government to trade again, so no business misses out on the chance to be involved.
In the meantime, GMP would love to hear from businesses that would like to be included on the vouchers, and can be contacted by phone on 6944 1001 or by email at [email protected]
