The South West Slopes Soccer Association has become the latest Riverina sporting competition to call it quits for 2021.
In a statement released last week, the association decided that the teams at the top of their respective ladders will be awarded titles for the season.
That means the Cootamundra Strikers 14/15/16s, and the Cootamundra SWSCU 11/12/13s teams were declared this year’s winners.
Runners up in the 14/15/16s are the Combined Temora/Gundagai team, and in the 11/12/13s the Cootamundra Croplands team.
The SWSSA Committee will distribute winners and runners up medals to clubs.
“Unfortunately we’ve had to make the decision – probably inevitably – that we won’t be able to finish our 2021 Junior Soccer Season,” the association stated.
“We were hopeful, with ‘lockdown’ finishing – but with community sport still excluded, it makes it impossible for us to play any further rounds or finals.
“Thank you to all players, coaches, ,anagers, committee members and parents who have worked with us this year to make the season as successful as possible – we’re proud of what we achieved in this changed landscape and were so happy to see so many examples of great sportsmanship – teams combining to make up numbers, loaning players to ensure teams could take the field, and so much teaching and learning.
“We achieved what we wanted to – being able to provide a place for all our members to play as much soccer as they wanted to.
“We hope to see you all back in 2022 for an incredible, full season.”
